The Heart Coming Out of Mitski’s Songs
Mitski sang with all of her heart, whipping out the words which caught us undone.
I have listened to Mitski’s “Nobody” before in 2020, got hooked on some songs from “Be the cowboy,” and that’s it. She’s just dust into the corner due to all of the genres and musicians that came into my life.
But after watching a glimpse of her performance in Primavera Sound circulating on Twitter, I must say I immediately got into her Spotify page again. My journey with Mitski’s starts with “Washing Machine Heart,” and I’ve been familiar with it. The best bop of Mitski I think, which made me bang it up inside.
Eventually, I bump into her 2014 album, “Bury Me At Makeout Creek.” The chills. Yes, her writings are so distinct, yet they fully pierce into my heart.
Please, hurry, leave me, I can’t breathe
Please don’t say you love me
胸がはち切れそうで
One word from you and I would
Jump off of this ledge I’m on, baby
Tell me, “Don’t,” so I can crawl back in
Mitski Miyawaki’s performance is so damn intriguing. Not only that, her songs suit her so well. Heavy, yet they made the listener’s heart full. The lyrics are sincere and relatable in many ways, part of it is her own experience.
From my perspective, Mitski’s way to interpret every motion in her life into her songs is indeed surreal. I mean when she writes at 3 a.m, or the hole in her bedroom becomes the most influential essence in her song, it turns our head blank.
Then again, I think it’s part of her Japanese blood, her lyrics are pretty poetic yet straightforward just like most Japanese songs are. Then, this is truly an expression of me falling in love with Mitski again and awaiting her performance in my country.
Peace out and toss your dirty shoes in the washing machine heart, babe.
